Maryland Commission on
Capital Punishment
approved
A group of 51 Maryland police,
prosecutors and correctional officials called on the State’s General
Assembly to repeal the death penalty, calling it ineffective and
wasteful of public safety resources. Lawmakers voted on March 21 to
create a commission to study capital punishment in
Maryland, after efforts to repeal the death penalty failed for a
second straight year.
The Commission would:
·
Study racial,
jurisdictional, and economic disparities in how the death penalty has
been administered.
·
Examine the risk
of innocent people being executed and compare the costs of executing
someone with the expense of imprisoning someone for life without parole.
·
Issue a report
on its findings and recommendations to the General Assembly by Dec. 15.
